Extraseed Flats

Hey everyone, I came across this excellent company selling their eco-friendly women’s shoes on Etsy.  Extraseed offers many vegan models, made out of materials such as vinyl, hemp, satin, and cotton.  The also rock some interesting patterns and designs, while varying from bold to more understated colors.  Since I know nothing about women’s shoes, I will not comment further on the style.  On the Eco front, they use recycled rubber for the soles, as well as scrap fabric whenever possible.  Keep up the good work Extraseed!  Click below for more pics, and visit the Etsy shop here!

Vans SF 106 PET

This Vans 106 SF PET is pretty sweet.  It is vegan: all synthetic uppers + water based inks and glues.  It’s also environmentally considerate: the uppers are devised of PET, or recycled plastic bottles.  Now, I’m not sure why the Vans site says it is a canvas upper, and Zappos says it is hemp and textile, but I’m guessing that it’s a combination of materials.  Still, something is better than nothing!  These shoes also feature an injection molded EVA outsole that supposedly minimizes production waste.  It also gives them a unique honeycomb look.  Click below for more pics…

You can cop the black at Zappos, or gray at Vans.com

Etnies Plus x Hamburger Eyes

Etnies has teamed up with photo Journal Hamburger Eyes on this new Townsend canvas vulc.  These lows feature a black and white photo collage by Ray Potes.  The shoe was launched as a part of a month long Casual Abyss exhibit at San Francisco’s Mission Cultural Center, which featured works by Ed Templeton, Dennis McGrath, and Michael Jang.  Available at Hamburger Eyes, all proceeds go towards their goal of promoting and preserving the fine arts.  Awesome.

Hey kids.  Here are some new colorways of the Supra Thunder in high top canvas.  The pinstripes really caught my eye.  Also available yellow and white.  Not sure where you can get these yet, but check out Zappos for older colorways.  More pictures below!

Vibram FiveFingers – Hot or Not?

Last post, Ben posed the question: why are socially conscious shoes and clothing exceptionally heinous?  Good question, Ben.  I can’t answer that for you.  What I can do is direct you to an example of why you are absolutely correct.  I came across the Vibram FiveFingers shoes (sandals?) while clicking on one of these random ads.

Company Shout – Jinga

I made a pledge a few days ago to start blogging about companies who do a little more than just put out shoes that don’t contain animal products.  I’m talking of course about “responsible” businesses, businesses that try to have a positive impact, be it on the environment or their communities.  See Toms Shoes.  While these guys appear to be a diverse bunch with different missions and goals, I will lump them under the umbrella of the socially responsible.  That label seems to fit, and I will tag these posts as such (see tags on right sidebar).

Today I’m giving a big shout out to UK company Jinga.  These guys are really, really posi.  Much like Toms Shoes, their main business is the manufacture of footwear, but their real goals lie in social enterprise.  Their main project is the Julio-Otoni Project, which develops programs and support for poor kids in Rio De Janeiro.  They also put a lot of thought into their manufacturing process.  They don’t use sweatshops, they make their soles out of recycled PVC, they have a green office, and of course the shoes are vegan!  Very cool.  It’s like they have the quad-fecta of awesomeness: (environmentally friendly)+(fair trade)+(vegan)+(non-profit involvement) = perfect socially responsible business.  The only information I couldn’t find is what the upper synthetics are made of.  I hope that it is from some recycled material, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

Mea Culpa to My Socially Conscious Readers

A few posts ago, I wrote about Asics.  I began with “when you’re an ethical shopper…“  I presumed, glibly, that I was being truthful.  However, one of my readers pointed out – quite correctly – that I missed something big.  He noted that while these shoes were not made out of animals, it was made BY someone who was likely exploited in order to bring us an artificially low-priced product (with the true costs hidden).  How true, and how irresponsible of me.  I admit, these issues – labor, environmental, etc. – have thus far been missing from the discussion in this blog.  I limit my “content” to the subject matter bearing the title of this site, i.e. vegan products.  Largely unexplored are the various ethical and moral implications inherent in today’s globalized garment industry.  I ignore facts such as unsafe factories, mistreatment, sexual harassment, unfair wages, child labor… the list goes on.  On top of this,  I paid no attention to the havoc wreaked on the environment, from the manufacture of synthetic leather, to the pesticides poured on cotton to make the canvas.  I can hardly pat myself on the back for being an “ethical consumer” without at least acknowledging these omissions.

This certainly has to change.  I freely admit that I have not been actively seeking out and promoting socially and environmentally conscious businesses.  I just see something cool, and if it’s not made out of leather, that’s been good enough for me.  Clearly, I must make more of an effort to promote more responsible companies… starting tomorrow with Jinga (thanks Nick!).

Thanks again to you readers who’ve been reading, commenting, and keeping me on my toes.  This is an experiment.  I’m not sure where this is going, but it will be you, the reader, that will largely steer this ship with your ideas and feedback.  Thanks for keeping this interesting!

- Henry

p.s. the title of this post is not implying that any of you guys are NOT socially conscious!

Vans Classics Authentic Hemp

Vans recently dropped news of the Authentic Hemp Pack, and now some of them are out in stores!  Good, because I really wasn’t feeling the beige and pink colors of the past releases.  Now you can get them in black hemp with a white sole, or brown with black sole.  Available at Extra Butter.
