Herschel Bags

UPDATE 10/23/15: Herschel cannot guarantee that ANY of their products are entirely vegan.  Please see email from their representative pasted into the comments section below.  From now on, avoid any bags with what appear to be leather tabs or straps.

We here at VK have been fans of Herschel Supply Co.’s bags since we first saw them.  We really dug the simple designs and how they reminded us of our bags when we were kids.  Unfortunately, the leather detailing would turn us away.  But the more I looked at pictures and in person, we noticed that the “leather” tabs and straps didn’t look real.  Lo and behold, after a random google search, it turns out that almost all of it is synthetic:

3. Are any of Herschel Supply’s products animal free/vegan friendly?
All of Herschel Supply’s products are animal free/vegan friendly with the exception of collaboration items, any Cotton Canvas products our Market tote and our Woodlands backpack.

Rejoice!  Herschel bags are vegan, with exceptions.  Pictured above and below are some of our favorites.  But there are so many options, you should check out their shop for all they have to offer.

  1. There are always some exceptions for that list. For example, the non-cotton Oak Messenger actually uses full-grain leather. Also, as far as I remembered from a conversation with a distributor at a Hershel sample sale, the Totem Messenger uses full-grain leather as well 🙁

When I read the above on their website, I got really excited because I always thought they used real leather in their products. Maybe, they haven’t updated that section of their website for a while….

  2. I think the text on their site is just out of date (and wrote them about it a while back). The descriptions for many of the items specify leather.

  3. Yeah, that’s odd. Still waiting to hear back. Will update as soon as I do. Thanks for the info.

  4. Hi everyone,

So to clear up the confusion, the statement on their site is true. This is the email I received from their media department yesterday:

“In answer to your question, the statement on our website is correct – bags from our mainline are vegan friendly, however most of our smaller capsule collections such as Cotton Canvas, Bad Hills, Studio, brand collaborations and our wallets program use real leather. If there’s a particular product you’d like clarification on, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.”

So there you have it. Just be careful with their collaborations and “cotton canvas” selections. I will be taking down whatever cotton canvas bags are on here now.

Thanks for keeping us on our toes!
    Henry

  5. I heard that. Too bad about Zappos, I just learned that they don’t ship to CA. But don’t be discouraged, I’m sure that you can get some of them on Amazon or other sellers. It’s not like Canada is in the middle of nowhere!

  6. Hi Natalia,

Thank you for contacting Herschel Supply.

Most of our bags have leather detailing within the straps and zipper pulls.

    Apologies for any inconveniences.

    All the best,

    The Herschel Supply Co

  7. Hi Natalia,

Thanks for your comment, and sorry for taking so long to respond. I contacted Herschel to confirm what they had on their website. Here’s their response, as of 5/26/13: “In answer to your question, the statement on our website is correct – bags from our mainline are vegan friendly, however most of our smaller capsule collections such as Cotton Canvas, Bad Hills, Studio, brand collaborations and our wallets program use real leather. If there’s a particular product you’d like clarification on, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.” Unless they changed their policy (which might be the case), I think that the person who responded is misinformed. I’ll follow up with them and get back.

  8. Hey Steve,

Sorry for the late response. I just emailed Herschel and will post a comment once I receive the response.

    Thanks for following up,
    Henry

    Dear Herschel,

I am a blogger and I wanted to put on my site a clarification on the materials you use in your bags. Are the straps and the tabs made out of real leather? It seems like we have been receiving some conflicting information. Please let us know what these materials are. Thank you!

    Best,

  10. I contacted Herschel and the woman I was talking to said that none of their products are actually vegan. They use a glue that is made from animal byproducts. Apart from that lots of their products don’t have leather.
