UPDATE 3/5/12: Sorry guys it was brought to my attention that the toecap is leather. I didn’t pay close enough attention on that one, which is too bad. These are really nice.
Vans continues to tweak the formula of their much loved (by me at least) Chukka boot. The California Chukka TC is virtually the same, with the noticeable difference being the rubber toe cap. There are more subtle touches, such as the metal eyelets and a patterned outsole. And the silhouette to me appears a little more refined, flatter near the toe. It’s a great “upgrade” to those who may think the original Chukka boot is a little boring.
Vans has managed to keep their classics fresh with different color combinations and collaborations. And we’ve seen them mix it up with various materials such as denim, corduroy, chambray, etc. I have to give them credit for trying something I’ve never seen before – these three Era models incorporate Neoprene, a synthetic material commonly used in wetsuits. Not sure how they will pan out, but my guess is that they will be more comfy (and water repellant) than the canvas ones. Available in grey, black, and blue.
Dickies and Converse are teaming up this spring to release a line of Chuck Taylor All Stars. The first shoe is the classic Chuck Taylor low featuring Dickies detailing in the heel. The other is an all new classic boot – a design inspired by the classic work boot, featuring a moc toe rather than the typical rubber toecap. Both designs will feature an upper that is made of the classic Dickies twill.
Normally I am skeptical about bandshoe collaborations, but when you combine one of the premier indie groups of the day, and the consistently fresh stylings of Keep, we all win. Dropped on March 26, 2011, the Keep and Animal Collective line features four shoes, each designed by a different band member.
This new Adidas collection is made from all recycled materials (grün is German for green). Even better, the Nizza Mid comes in canvas, which means it might be vegan. *I will confirm this with Adidas and provide an update* The Nizza Mid uses a grey and blue colorway and has huge embedded Adidas logo on the side. The other shoes are Stan Smith, Forum, Mid, Superstar 2, and Samba. These feature some interesting materials and colors, including felt and multi-colored laces. See Nicekicks for more on these.

I was a little worried after not seeing anything on their website and them not responding to my first email. But there you have it. Happy guilt free shopping, and I will be posting any new canvas models I come across.
The Nike Air Max 90 is an excellent model to make as vegan, since it can be used for running, and it’s got classic style. The upper is made of synthetic leather and mesh. It comes in black/black or grey/white. Personally I am hating the black colorway, it looks like a pair of old man shoes. But as NiceKicks put it, wear it if you work somewhere that makes you wear black shoes.
I don’t think these are widely available on the web. Don’t be fooled! There is a black/black leather version of this, and it looks exactly the same.

I don’t know anything about performance running shoes, but I chanced upon an interesting blog post from a vegan runner who was extolling the virtues of the Vegan Asics Gel Kayano. See the Running Girl’s Blog Here. From what she says, they are really good. They got like, gel and stuff, memory foam… man there is more technology than a space shuttle in this thing. Anyway, the models pictured above are the Gel Kayano 16. These replaced the older version, the Gel Kayano 15. If you do a little comparison shopping, you will see that the 15’s are still available but less expensive.
Womens and Mens Gel Kayano 16 available on Endless.
As someone who grew up in the 90’s listening to hip-hop, I am a huge Wu-Tang Clan fan. Masta Killa is one of the original members of the Wu. He doesn’t have a crazy style, and maybe he’s not the most charismatic of the bunch, he always impressed me with his skills. Now he’s impressive on a whole other level – promoting vegetarianism. I have seen him promoting stuff for Peta, and I came across this awesome video. He’s even got his son, Eternal representing!
