Vans California Chukka TC (not vegan)

UPDATE 3/5/12: Sorry guys it was brought to my attention that the toecap is leather.  I didn’t pay close enough attention on that one, which is too bad.  These are really nice.

Vans continues to tweak the formula of their much loved (by me at least) Chukka boot.  The California Chukka TC is virtually the same, with the noticeable difference being the rubber toe cap.  There are more subtle touches, such as the metal eyelets and a patterned outsole.  And the silhouette to me appears a little more refined, flatter near the toe.  It’s a great “upgrade” to those who may think the original Chukka boot is a little boring.

Available at DQM and Bows and Arrows.

Vans Chukka Boot Red

Back in the day (and by that, I mean a year ago), I rocked a pair of Converse Chuck Taylor low reds.  I received compliments about them all the time, but I now I wonder if they secretly thought they looked like I came out of the circus.  I lacked the self-awareness at the time to give it much thought.  I just took it at face value.  It’s either a flaw or asset, I’m not sure which at the moment.

But enough about me.  I doubt anyone will be clowning (heh) you about these.  The canvas Vans Chukka Boot has been elusive, but I finally found one.  Bright Red isn’t the most versatile color, but it’s still really dope.  I don’t think they can really screw this one up.  Sittin on some white gums, topped also with pearly white laces for a nice contrast.

Available at Karmaloop for a reasonable $55.

UPDATE 2/17/11: Also available at Zappos in Red and Black/Black.

Keds Champion Chukka

Found another Chukka – I hope I’m not being redundant.  The Champion Chukka from Keds is about as simple as it gets.  This pared down, understated style has worked for the company so far.  Once known for being casual sneakers for young women, it’s largely broken out of that mold.  They’ve also been aggressively trying to cash in on the retro basketball shoe craze with their Pro-Keds line.  The good thing is that, like Converse, they work equally well for girls or guys.

I’ve also added a tag just for Chukkas.  There are a bunch here already, and more to come.  It’s probably convenient for you, if you like the style, to be able to browse the many varieties.  Hope this helps!

Available at Zappos.

Gravis Chuck

I’m very happy to share the first Gravis shoe I’ve come across without any leather.  Now we just need to find out whether they are completely vegan in the glues.  Also, this appears to be the only colorway that they offer in non-leather.  Still, I am pleased.  Gravis did a really great job with the Chuck, an obvious riff on the ever popular Chukka boot.  And I very much like the tan and brown colors.  Vulcanized sole is a must, of course.  Not much else to report, enjoy!

Avail at Zappos

Hawaiian skate and surf brand In4mation and Vans comes correct with a clean and bold red and demin low version of the Chukka.  I am a huge fan of the Chukka Boot, and I hope they come out with this in that model.  Anyway, this one uses a royal blue canvas for the upper, and features some striking red laces and sole stripe.  It also has a gum sole and houndstooth inner lining!

For more info, check out Nice Kicks.

The shoe drops on Dec. 12 at In4mation retailers for a reasonable $85.   Quantities will be limited so don’t wait!

Also, if you’re interested in some denim slip-ons, check out the Sperry Top-Sider Striper.

NOTE: I am waiting on Vans to confirm that their canvas/denim shoes are in fact vegan.  Please comment or email me if you have any information on this matter.
