Vans Era and Half Cab Denim

I feel a strong sense of deja vu as I write about this new pack – Vans Era and Half Cab in blue and black denim.  I just hear this voice in the back of my head that they’ve done this before.  Oh well.  If Vans is not original, at least the shoes look good.  At least to me, anyway.  If you don’t already have some denim sneaks in your collection, here’s your chance.  I get the sense that Era is more frequently updated with different colors and materials, while the Half Cabs, not as much.  Then again, the Half Cab’s popularity with nostalgic skater dudes such as myself is undeniable.  Pick some up now and keep them on ice, who knows when they’ll be available in this style again.

NOTE: THE ERA IN BLACK DENIM APPEARS TO HAVE A SUEDE HEEL.

Available at Nice Kicks.

Lugz Strider Denim

When I think of Lugz, I keep seeing images of thug ass rappers in the 90’s rocking some oversized jeans, sagged way low, and of course some prominent boots to match.  Timberland was the iconic brand, still is.   Lugz always seemed to be an imitator, and never really made a mark beyond a niche under the umbrella of “urban” wear.  But looky what we have here.  I can’t say I’ve seen a wallabee boot done in denim, but my memory is shot.  It’s probably been done before.  But speaking of 90’s, the wallabee was also a big deal back then.  Anyway, here is a good one from Lugz, the Strider Denim.  I’m definitely feeling the black denim over a lighter color too.

Available at Karmaloop.

Nike Toki ND Denim

The Nike Toki ND is one of the better chukka style sneakers out there.  For a while, all I was seeing was suede versions, or canvas ones with the suspect leather swoosh.  Fortunately, I came upon this full-on denim colorway that has not a speck of leather, to my eye.  The swoosh is denim, and the tags appear to be denim or nylon.  I have been notified of several canvas versions, but they don’t seem to be available in the States.  I will keep you guys updated if I hear anything.

These are available at Finish Line and Urban Outfitters.

Air Jordan V.2 Grown

Props to Justin for giving me the scoop on this one.  As many of you know, Jordan is a Nike brand that originated with MJ (not Michael Jackson, may he rest in peace), the G.O.A.T. in hoops history.  The first Air Jordan came out in 1985, and changed the sneaker game forever.  I’m not sure when Nike made Jordan its own brand, but I know its been around for maybe ten years.  That brand has an air of exclusivity, such as the selective sponsorship of athletes hand picked by the man himself.  It seems like anything associated with Michael Jordan has this aura of exceptionalism.

Queen x Vans Authentic

In one of the more puzzling sneaker collaborations of the day, Vans is celebrates Queen with its own Authentic in black denim.  Oookay.  Vans, as a skate and surf company, could not be anything farther from this 70’s British classic rock band.  You know what, whatever.  Denim seems to be really popular as of late, and I’m feeling the black material.  This color is contrasted with red accents, along with a Queen tongue logo, and album prints on the sole.  Nothing celebrates a band like stepping on symbols of its life’s work, right?

Available at Primitive.

UPDATE: Also available in SK8-Hi x Queen (via tall mike)

Nike SB Dunk Low Larry Perkins

These Nike SB Dunk Lows are named after Larry Perkins, a fictitious, “most under-rated skateboarder of all time” who used to make prank phone calls on behalf of Big Brother Magazine (my favorite back in the day!).  They feature black and grey/brown denim upper, and it’s reported that the swoosh is made of patent leather.  But upon closer inspection, we here at Vegan Kicks think it’s reasonable to assume that they’re actually vinyl or some other synthetic.  Depending on how hardcore you are, you might be willing to take a chance.  Other interesting stuff: a “furry” inner lining, and a tongue that gives a telephone ring when you squeeze it.

They will be released on March 20.  Check Premier for updates, they seem to be in the know.  Also, don’t forget they are quickstrikes so if you really want them you better get em fast!

Vans Herringbone and Black Denim Pack

Vans keeps churning out more and more packs.  These new non-leather, vegan Vans utilize herringbone weave (canvas, I’m guessing) and black denim for their uppers.  The herringbone pack comes in the Chukka and Era models, while the black denim is rocked by the slip-on and Era.  Looks like they all come with white laces.

Nothing spectacular here.  Maybe it’s the picture, but the colors and materials don’t really jump out at me.  Out of the bunch, I would say the Chukka in herringbone is the sweetest.

All of these in the Vans Herringbone/Black Denim Pack can be bought at Kicks/Hi.

Also, the Era Herringbone can be got at Zappos.

The shoe drops on Dec. 12 at In4mation retailers for a reasonable $85.   Quantities will be limited so don’t wait!

Also, if you’re interested in some denim slip-ons, check out the Sperry Top-Sider Striper.

Sperry Top Sider: Striper Slip-On

Here in New York, the winter has been very mild so far (thanks, Al Gore).  But yesterday brought freezing winds and snow/sleet/precipitation that hurts when it hits your face.   Some of you, luckily, won’t have to deal with that.  You lucky bastards living in warm parts of the country have the option of rocking slip ons during the “dead of winter,” so for those of you looking for some alternative to Vans, I give you the Perry Top Sider Striper – “classic canvas and timeless nautical style that says ‘summer’ all year long.”  HA.  I love that.

Despite its rich and preppy leanings, I really dig this shoe.  I’m not crazy about the plaid, but I’m feeling the denim, which I don’t think I’ve seen before.  Also, the quality seems to be on point.  It even has a specialized vulcanized rubber sole for wet conditions.  Neat.

But of course, the Striper’s are vegan.  The company has a special section for their vegan shoes, and their policy is right out in front: “This collection of vegan shoes by Sperry Top-Sider is made with no animal products and maintain the same standard of quality Sperry Top-Sider is known for.
